The social agency studio this year is about inclusion.
The question from week one: "What is a meaningful architectural response that builds inclusion?"
Based on the site visit I found a rich amount of street artwork and graffiti around the Redfern area like the street art on a coffee shop of "Tony Abbott marrying himself in marriage" drawn by Scott Marsh. Through further research, I found an interesting relationship between graffiti and property.
Graffiti or skateboard culture naturally needs to conflict with public or private property, but it also can be accepted to be street art or Olympic sport.
So I feel the "Law" which protected the architecture also create an invisible barrier causing social exclusion. People who use public buildings will also be trying to protect their community and exclude strangers.
The Graffiti Laneways of Melbourne and Huangjueping Graffiti Street in Chongqing China became valuable references showing me how social inclusion has been created when the law and policy step back and so much emotional expression can let people draw on the building.
So I designed this building without law for property protection (fire safety, construction, etc still be normal). So kids can paint and skateboard on the site and people can come to paint their graffiti and share it on social media. And I use the train to translate a public element to the part of the unowned architecture to emphasise visitors' experience to act more freedom over the rule from the public space by painting, eating, talking or singing.
And I hope people can have a fun experience like Graffiti Street in Chongqing and Melbourne through the UNOWNED architecture. And the UNOWNED architecture can include everyone's arts, words, voices and movements even the people who don't like it.
