A summary on Maruti Gypsy models from 1985 till 2019 based on the information from the period brochures, auto journals auto journals and fellow Gypsy owners and enthusiasts.

Maruti Gypsy was launched in the Indian automobile market in late 1985 by Maruti Udyog Ltd. It was the long wheelbase version of the Suzuki Jimny/Samurai SJ 410 and was available with four wheel drive as standard fitment.

1985 to 1993 – MG410
The first model of Gypsy was codenamed the MG410 where MG stands for Maruti Gypsy and 410 stands for 4 cylinder 1000cc engine. It had a Suzuki F10A, 970cc Carbureted petrol engine developing 45HP@ 5500rpm and 7.5kg-m torque at 3000rpm. It was mated to a 4 forward synchromesh, 1 reverse gearbox and had an estimated top speed of 105kmph. The same engine was later used in the sedan Maruti 1000 as well.
Four body styles were available.
Hard top – with single front facing rear seat and Airconditioner as an optional Factory fitted equipment.
Soft top – with two parallel side facing rear seats/single front facing rear seat.
Pick up – without top and rear seats
Ambulance with necessary fitments
It featured front disc brakes and rear drum brakes as standard. Front axles were equipped with AISIN Free wheeling Hubs (Made in Japan). An MG410 plastic badge with silver letters on black background was affixed at a location forward of the front left door.
Colour options available were Cream, Racing blue, Francois White, Apple Red, Emerald Green and bayers blue. The plastic fascia around the headlights were painted in Francois white across all models.

1993 to 2000 – MG410W
The first upgrade to the Gypsy MG410 came in 1991 and the new model MG410W had the track widths increased by 90mm at the front and rear. Front track width became 1300mm compared to the 1210mm of the previous model and rear track width became 1310mm compared to the 1220mm of the previous model. The W in MG410W stands for Wide-track.
Bigger body coloured metal fenders were incorporated to accommodate the increased track width. The old MG410 had thinner black coloured fenders. Plastic bumper extensions were added at both front and rear aligned with the front rear wheel fenders. A black plastic side cladding and corner pieces were added at the bottom portion between the front and rear wheel fenders.
Initial models had an MG410W badge similar to the MG410 plastic badge but later models had MG410W stickers in a pale grey colour at the same location. Last few batch of MG410W sold had GYPSY-E badging at a location forward to the front RH door.
Few initial production batches of MG410W retained the AISIN free wheeling hubs from the MG410 but was soon deleted and made available only as an MGP additional fitment.
Body styles available were as follows
Soft top – with side facing foldable rear seats
Hardtop – with front facing rear seats finished in fabric upholstery. The option of air conditioning was no longer available as majority of the sales was to cater the Government department orders.
Pickup – without rear seats and top.
Ambulance – with necessary fittings.
Cabin top – 2 seater with factory built cabin only for EXPORT MARKET.
Colour options available were Francois white till 1995 and Milky white later. In addition Apple red, harvest green and Neptune blue were also available

1996 to 2001 – MG413W – Gypsy King Carb
The first major upgrade to the Gypsy came in the form of a new 1298cc Suzuki G13BB carbureted engine that developed 60bhp@5500rpm and torque of 10.2kgm@3500rpm. The engine was mated to a new 5 forward synchromesh and 1 reverse manual gearbox with a 2 speed divorced transfer case. The same engine was doing its duty on the Esteem as well.
The new model was codenamed the MG413W where MG stands for Maruti Gypsy, 413 for four cylinder 1300cc petrol engine and W for wide track. MG413W was given the name Gypsy King and the new design front grille and bulge on the bonnet differentiated it immediately from the MG410W which was sold side by side until 2000.
The MG413W met the BS1 emission norms where as the MG410W was sold only in non metro cities.
Body styles available were Soft top, hard top and ambulance.
Colour options were Milky white, Apple red, Harvest green and Neptune blue.

1999 to 2019 – MG413W – Gypsy King MPFI

In late 1999 the MPFI version of G13BA engine was launched to meet the then prevalent BS2 emission norms. The MPFI engine developed a max power of 80bhp@6000rpm and max torque of 10.51kgm@4500rpm.

Brake booster was added to improve the braking efficiency to match additional power output of the MPFI engine. Head rests were added to the front seats and new Gypsy King decal was placed below the MG
