A series on Film loading.
Shortends, what are they abs why we order a few extra cans and bags from the lab at the start of the job.
Let's say I receive 10 rolls of 400' cans of film. If we always expose all 400' then I will not need any extra cans, as I will put the exposed film back in the can that I took it out from.
But what if we only exposed 290'? The balance 110' is still usable and would not be considered wastage. So I need a spare can and bag to be able to can the SHORTEND 110'. So now you know what a short end is 💖. Always put a label on the can that has the emulsion number, date you canned it, and the length, in this case SE110'. I also write SE110 on the side of the can at the four cardinal points so when I'm looking at a stack of film, I can quickly identify the fresh stock ,recans and shortends and stock length. Also, the color of tape you use to seal the can matters!
There are a few other reasons why you might need an extra van. Can you think of any?
