Super Punch-Out!! - Rick Bruiser [0'10"37] (NTSC-J WR)

This was also done on an actual original "Nintendo Power" cartridge, which was the only way to legally own this game for playing on a Super Famicom. Effectively, the Super Famicom and Gameboy had these unique white flash cartridges that would hold a couple of select games depending on how big the game ROMs were. You would go up to kiosks, insert your cartridge, insert money, and select what game you want from a select few that they had for this service, and have it downloaded onto your cartridge! The one that I own happens to have an original download of Super Punch Out for Japan on it, making it fairly rare to own, as Super Punch Out was only released for Japan exclusively through this service in the late year of 1998! This cartridge has a super unique intro sequence, with a pretty sweet little jam of a music track. Since this record is reasonably easy to match, I figured I would let a full loop of the intro play before I did attempts of this, and upload the full session of attempts just to have this neat little intro preserved in pixel perfect quality. Ok, finally I can talk about the fight itself, haha. This version of Super Punch Out is completely identical in terms of the mechanics in every fight compared to the US release, except for the bizarre oddity that Rick Bruiser seems to have a much faster recoil animation for when Rick goes into his dizzy animation! Rick's recovery from the last bodyblow of phase 1 in the Japanese version is 15 frames faster than in the US version, resulting in a first knockdown of 6.69 as opposed to 6.98. Everything else about this fight is exactly the same as in the US version of this fight.

I've done this exact run before, but I did it on an SD2SNES. I figured since I'm about to redo a ton of Punch Out fights to take advantage of my sick RGB recording setup, that I should do this run on the actual cartridge this time, since I actually own it now.

For the first punch of each phase, I have my gloves down for the first frame of the timer when it starts, then on the very next frame, I throw a left jab for phase 1, or an uppercut for phases 2 and 3. Whenever Rick is attacked with an unstunned punch, he reels to the opposite side and throws a counter-jab. The counter in phase 1 doesn't really have a great cue, so I just try to punch as soon as I see my character centered from dodging the counter-jab. From there, everything is buffered for phase 1.

After you throw the guard manipulated uppercut at the start of phase 2, just dodge the counter-jab, then dodge his next hook and instantly throw a low super for the knockdown. Phase 3 is exactly the same as the start to phase 2, as it only contains the guard manipulated upppercut. These uppercuts only have roughly a 5/8th chance of landing, so it can be slightly annoying to get.

I should be reuploading super high quality IL's for this game really soon. I want all my IL times to be done on a SNES, since half of the IL times I did like 10 years ago were on Wii Virtual Console. The quality between videos on my SPO fights vary wildly, and I'd like really like to get them all to look just as clean as this one. Thankfully the SPO IL fights are really easy by comparison to the ones in MTPO or PO Wii, so they should be showing up pretty regularly after this upload.
