Discipline and setting boundaries with your children is an essential part of parenting, helping your children grow and develop into healthy, well-adjusted adults. But knowing how to set boundaries and especially keeping the boundaries you have set can be challenging. That's why in this video, we'll explore the importance of healthy boundaries in parenting and share practical tips on how to set limits with your children in a respectful and effective way.
I grew up with the idea that love = limits. Children crave for boundaries because they make them feel safe and assure them that you are there to stand firm for them. With age-appropriate boundaries and their parent’s guidance, children gradually learn to take other people’s needs into account and to take care of common responsibilities. Boundaries are also needed to protect a child from things they cannot yet process and understand.
Kids need their parents to be a strong authority for them. They do not have the skills to figure out their boundaries yet so they WANT and NEED you to be the person who sets boundaries to make them feel safe. And, they will keep testing these boundaries to check that you are still there for them and stand firm. If they see that a boundary moves, it makes them anxious. Why is my parent there for me one day and the next day I need to test the limit 20 times before I hit the fence? This feeling of unpredictability makes children very uneasy, restless and insecure.
Boundaries work in the best interest of both parents and children. By setting boundaries, a parent:
protects their child's growth and development
ensures the satisfaction of both their and their children's needs
creates physical and psychological safety
supports the child's internal, immature self-regulation system when the child is not yet able to regulate their own activities and emotions
teaches what is allowed or generally accepted and what is not
sets requirements and expectations suitable for the child's age and developmental stage
teaches the child self-control
helps the child build a truthful image of themselves and their abilities, which creates the basis for a healthy self-esteem
It is important for the parent to understand that boundaries protect instead of harm the child. When you set healthy, logical boundaries that align with your values, you can also stick to them without getting nervous or feeling guilty.
