Storyteller Charlotte Blake Alston has been perpetuating the oral art of storytelling nearly all of her life. By choice, she generally shares traditional tales. Do age-old stories still have relevance in the age of tweeting and fast-paced interface with electronic devices? Why have these stories survived generations, migrations, languages and cultural transformations? Ms. Alston invites you to experience or reconnect with the traditional art of oral storytelling and consider what these stories continue to offer. -
Charlotte Blake Alston is a nationally acclaimed storyteller, narrator, instrumentalist, librettist and singer who performs in venues throughout North America and abroad. For over 20 years, she has served as host and narrator on family concerts for The Philadelphia Orchestra and Carnegie Hall and has performed for Lincoln Center Institute. She has appeared in such venues as the Smithsonian Institution, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the National Storytelling Festival and the National Festival of Black Storytelling. As a librettist, her commissioned choral work The Children’s March retells the story of the historic event in Birmingham, AL. In 2016, she was selected to perform at the weekend opening of the National Museum of African American History and Culture. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
