Advancing Justice for Myanmar: Landmark Hearings at the International Court of Justice

Описание: As the International Court of Justice (ICJ) convenes merits hearings in the historic case of The Gambia v. Myanmar, this event will provide an opportunity for reflection upon the significance and potential impact of progress in the case. The event will highlight voices of the Rohingya community and provide insight into the case’s meaning for international justice as well as the current, dire context for Rohingya in Myanmar and in the refugee camps in Bangladesh.

This event will also underscore the need for gender-sensitive justice and accountability for Rohingya women and girls, who have faced specific and disproportionate harms during and in the aftermath of the Myanmar military’s atrocities against the Rohingya in 2016 and 2017. As the ICJ hearings proceed, it is critical to center the views and perspectives, as well as the diverse experiences of and impact on the Rohingya community. Governments that are intervening in the case will also have an opportunity to offer remarks about the case’s significance.

The event will be open on an invite-only basis to members of the press (including potentially online), government representatives, and human rights defenders and civil society representatives working on issues of justice and accountability for the people of Myanmar, including the Rohingya.
