Historical Significance: It led the formation of 800 other C-47s from which approximately 13,000 U.S. paratroopers jumped, marking the beginning of the liberation of France in the last two years of World War II1.
Message to Hitler: The aircraft’s name, chosen by Army Air Force Lt. Col. John M. Donalson, who flew the plane during the operation, served as a direct message to Adolf Hitler that the days of Nazi Germany were numbered.

D-Day Squadron Participation:
As part of the D-Day Squadron, the “Spirit of Douglas” embarked on a remarkable journey across the Atlantic Ocean in 2024.
Departing from Waterbury-Oxford Airport (KOXC) in Connecticut, it followed the original Blue Spruce route.
The squadron commemorated the 80th anniversary of the D-Day invasions and the 75th anniversary of the Berlin Airlift.

Placid Lassie was built by the Douglas Aircraft Company in Long Beach, California in July 1943 with serial number 42-24064.
She cost $109,683 to build (equivalent to just short of $2 million in 2023).
After being assigned to the 74th Troop Carrier Squadron (TCS) of the 434th Troop Carrier Group (TCG), she embarked on her wartime adventures12.
D-Day and Beyond:
On June 6, 1944, Placid Lassie played a pivotal role during D-Day. Alongside her crew, she took off at 0200 hours to invade Normandy.
Carrying 155 men and equipment for the U.S. Army’s 101st Airborne Division in assault gliders, she dropped her gliders around 0400.
Later that day, she returned to Normandy, towing another glider.
In the days following the D-Day invasion, Placid Lassie flew resupply missions into France, supporting the 101st Airborne2.
Operation Market Garden and Operation Repulse:
After D-Day, the 74th TCS provided logistical support and evacuation services across France.
In September 1944, Placid Lassie participated in Operation Market Garden, securing key bridges in the liberation of the Netherlands.
During the Battle of the Bulge, she was part of Operation Repulse, airborne resupply for the encircled 101st Airborne at Bastogne2.
Post-War Years:
Placid Lassie continued her journey beyond WWII:
Purchased by West Coast Airlines in May 1949, she became their 6th airplane.
For the next 19 years, she flew passenger routes from Boeing Field, WA down to Sacramento and out to Boise.
West Coast Airlines later merged with other carriers to form Air West.
By January 1969, the remaining DC-3s were deemed surplus and sold off1.
Placid Lassie’s rivets crossed the English Channel on that historic day in 1944, and her legacy lives on as a true war hero
