One of the most special parts of our combo experience is the marshland we hunt in northern Mexico. This area sits directly in the path of the Central Flyway, and when conditions line up, ducks stack into this marsh exactly the way you hope they would.
This hunt is very different from what we do out on the Laguna Madre. The bay is wide open water, grass flats, and long sight lines, where you’ll often see redheads, pintails, and other divers working big areas. The marsh is tighter, greener, and more intimate. Freshwater pockets, tall grass, cattails, reeds, and winding bayous that funnel birds right into the cover. Here you’ll see more puddle ducks, teal, wigeon, and mixed groups moving low and fast through the vegetation.
Getting there is part of the experience. It’s a longer drive than the bay, so when we go to the marsh, we commit the whole day to it. You ride out on airboats, winding through narrow marsh channels and shallow creeks, with wildlife everywhere. Birds lifting off in the distance, fish breaking the surface, and miles of untouched country in every direction.
Because of the distance, we don’t rush it. We bring everything with us. Tables, food, drinks, cooks, bartenders. After the morning hunt, we set up a camp-style lunch right there in the marsh, under the shade, cold drinks in hand, eating together before heading back out for the afternoon. It’s one of those days you don’t forget.
Very few people ever step foot in this marsh, let alone get to experience it this way. It’s quiet, wild, and completely unpressured. From the airboat ride in, to the birds working the cover, to lunch in the middle of nowhere, it’s about as pristine as a duck hunting experience can get anywhere in the world.
