Have you ever noticed that owls can fly right past you without making a single sound? When you compare it to other birds, the difference is clear. In this experiment, a man compares a pigeon and an owl flying the same way. With the pigeon, each wing beat pushes the air hard, which normally creates noise. But when the owl flies, the wing movement looks smooth, and the sound is almost gone. The secret is in their special feathers. Unlike most birds, owl feathers have soft, comb-like edges that break up the air as it flows over their wings. This stops loud turbulence from forming.
They also have a velvety surface that absorbs sound, making their flight nearly silent.
