SNAP's new able-bodied requirements leaves some current recipients 'devastated'

Описание: After the government re-opened, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients now have to follow new work requirements.

If you’re what the government calls “able-bodied,” you will lose access to SNAP.

Government officials said if you are between the ages of 18 and 65, don’t live with kids under 14, aren’t disabled, and don’t work at least 20 hours a week, you'll likely lose your SNAP benefits, leaving some people without access to critical food.

Nelson Scott is on the verge of losing access to SNAP.

“That’s some bullsh**t," said Scott. "Man, I'm devastated, actually.'


He is 38, not disabled, doesn’t have any kids, doesn’t attend school, and does not have a job.

Those are just some of the reasons he’s no longer eligible for SNAP benefits.

“How much did SNAP help you?” I asked.

“It helped me a lot. It got me $292 a month," Scott replied.

The crackdown by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is led by President Trump.

He signed the One Big Beautiful Bill into law in July, which requires states to comply with the new SNAP changes.

The government shutdown stalled the original Nov. 1 deadline for implementation.

However, these changes are still moving forward.

Signe Anderson is the Senior Director of Nutrition Advocacy with the Tennessee Justice Center.

“Because of rules like this, we are going to see individuals who are going to be forced to skip meals," said Anderson.
She points out that senior citizens and children ages 15–18 will be among the most affected.

Rick Williams is a conservative political analyst.

“I mean, a 15- or 16-year-old can take care of their stuff at home while you go work. There’s no reason you can’t be working," said Williams. “There are plenty of jobs out there.”
Scott told FOX 17 News since he is a convicted felon, getting a job isn’t easy.

"I would get one if y’all get me one. Y’all be felony-friendly, hire us," said Scott.

The Tennessee Department of Human Services (TDHS) hasn’t answered when these changes will begin after FOX 17 News reached out several days in row.
