A Climate Check-Up for Ocean Currents
In a rare winter mission, scientists braved the icy waters of the Greenland Sea to gather urgent data on a powerful system of ocean currents called the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC). This network regulates global climate, and researchers fear it may be approaching a critical tipping point due to climate change. If it weakens or collapses, north-western Europe could face temperature drops of up to 15°C, while the southern hemisphere may experience extreme heat and altered rainfall patterns—especially in the Amazon. “We’re in the messy middle of figuring this out,” says oceanographer Susan Lozier.
