John Stanley nació en Londres en 1712. Hacia los dos años un accidente doméstico lo dejó casi ciego. La pieza que interpreto en el órgano Hauptwerk de St. Michel en Tiérache (Francia) lleva el título genérico de “Voluntary”, que son piezas para tocar al principio o al final de un servicio religioso protestante. Stanley compuso tres volúmenes de “Voluntaries” para órgano. Casi todos presentan una introducción corta y lenta seguida de un movimiento para un registro de Solo (con frecuencia la Trompeta) o una Fuga. Este Voluntary VIII del Op. 5 tiene tres movimientos. Un Allegro introductorio, seguido por un Adagio en el Recitativo y el último es una Fuga vigorosa en el Gran Órgano,
Stanley comenzó sus estudios musicales a los 7 años y a los 17 se convirtió en la persona más joven en obtener el título de Licenciado en Música de Oxford. Tenía una extraordinaria memoria musical con la que compensaba su casi absoluta ceguera.
Excelente organista y violinista, George Frideric Händel acudía a escuchar sus interpretaciones. Sucedió a William Boyce como Maestro de la Música del Rey desde 1779, cargo que ocupó hasta su muerte en 1786, a los 74 años. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
John Stanley was born in London in 1712. Around the age of two, a domestic accident left him almost blind. The piece that he performed at the Hauptwerk organ of St. Michel in Tiérache (France) bears the generic title of "Voluntary", which are pieces to be played at the beginning or at the end of a Protestant religious service. Stanley composed three volumes of "Voluntaries" for organ. Almost all feature a short, slow introduction followed by a movement for a Solo register (often the Trumpet) or a Fugue. This Voluntary VIII from Op. 5 has three movements. An introductory Allegro, followed by an Adagio in the Recitative and the last is a vigorous Fugue in the Grand Organ,
Stanley began his musical studies at age 7, and at 17 he became the youngest person to earn a Bachelor of Music degree from Oxford. He had an extraordinary musical memory with which he made up for his almost complete blindness.
An excellent organist and violinist, George Frederic Händel came to listen to his performances. He succeeded William Boyce as Master of the King's Music from 1779, a position he held until his death in 1786, at age 74.
