Kevin Lychwick is 63 years old, a retired Air Force veteran, and he is standing trial in Waukesha County, Wisconsin for first-degree intentional homicide and hiding a corpse. The state says he shot and killed his neighbor, Carlos Maldonado, wrapped the body, and hid it in a wooded area behind the apartment building where both men lived. The body was not found for months. If the jury convicts on the top charge, the sentence is mandatory life in prison. Wisconsin has no death penalty and no separate penalty phase, so everything in this case comes down to a single verdict.
Here is what makes it worth watching. The gun that ties Lychwick to the killing did not turn up at a crime scene. It surfaced after police stopped him for speeding and searched his car. He fought to throw that search out as a violation of the Fourth Amendment, and he lost. Take the gun away and the state is left with a circumstantial case, no proven motive, and no clear connection between the two men. And Lychwick is not letting a lawyer carry that fight. He fired his attorney. He is representing himself, personally cross-examining the detectives and forensic experts who built the case against him. Every day of this trial runs on that same tension, the full weight of the state on one side and a single citizen with no legal training on the other.
He is presumed innocent, and that is not a formality. It is the whole point. Twelve jurors will decide whether what the state has is proof beyond a reasonable doubt, or a story with holes in it. What we do here is make sure you can see every piece of how they get to that answer.
