In this video, we look for mole crickets (ararawan in Ilocano) in the rice fields being tilled by a Rotovator. Mole crickets are picked from overturned soil during the rainy season. They are considered to be an exotic food.
Because there were very few mole crickets, we shifted to looking for eggs in the rice fields, particularly for eggs of the Greater Painted Snipe (locally called Pakubo). We find several nests with remains of broken egg shells, a hopeful indicator that chicks have hatched. The Greater Painted Snipe’s conservation status is listed as “Least Concern” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
Because the fallow rice field is due to be tilled, we take the eggs that we find. Leaving them just to be destroyed by the Rotovator in the tilling process would be wasteful.
