Carburetion is not gone yet. In this episode of OVERTIME, Junior provides a detailed rebuild of the venerable 2-barrel Carter BBD carburetor found on our 1965 Dodge A100.
This A100 has a 273ci engine from a 1964 Dodge instead of the original 225ci Slant Six that came with the vehicle in 1965. Our files indicate that the truck was purchased by Hemmings in 1999 and was originally red and white. At some point, we added the blue.
The Carter BBD dual-barrel carburetor is original for the 273 V8. The design spanned four decades with the earliest iterations of the Ball & Ball design in the Fifties. In his AllPar article “A Look at the Carter BBS and BBD Carburetors,” David Zatz tells of the introduction of the BB series as both a single (BBS) and a dual (BBD) barrel design, but that was only after the Ball Family, seeking to sell their carburetor company, was introduced to Carter’s American Car and Foundry Company ownership in the late 1940s by Chrysler’s head of engineering (1925-1949) Carl Breer.
The BB design would be the workhorse for Carter’s OE two-barrel applications for a wide variety of OE manufacturers. From the 1954 De Soto Firedome’s 276 V8 through 1984, the venerable BBD carburetor was found on Chrysler small-block LA V8s as well as in Super6 Slant-Six applications.
