In late November 2001, deep inside enemy-controlled Afghanistan, the British Special Air Service launched the largest operation the regiment had carried out since World War II.
Operation Trent saw 120 SAS operators inserted more than 150 kilometers behind enemy lines to assault a heavily fortified Al-Qaeda compound in the remote southwest of the country. The mission began with the first HALO parachute insertion in SAS history and escalated into a daylight assault supported by U.S. fighter jets.
What followed was an intense firefight against entrenched enemy forces, the destruction of major Taliban funding operations, and the seizure of vital intelligence linked to Al-Qaeda networks across Afghanistan.
This documentary-style breakdown covers:
• The SAS deployment at the start of the Afghanistan War
• The planning behind Operation Trent
• The HALO jump deep into hostile territory
• The desert assault and close air support
• The intelligence captured during the mission
Operation Trent remains one of the most significant special forces operations of the early War on Terror and demonstrated the SAS’s ability to conduct large-scale long-range assaults under extreme conditions.
