PIPES AND DRUMS ON EDINBURGH’S ROYAL MILE

Описание: While in Edinburgh on The Royal Mile, I heard some music playing near St. Giles’ Cathedral. I got really lucky to get a chance to hear some live pipes and drums playing in Scotland. The 1st Malvern Company Boys’ Brigade played a few songs and then marched up the Rayal Mile to Edinburgh Castle.

Background

The Boys' Brigade (BB) was founded in Glasgow on 4th October 1883 by Sir William Alexander Smith. From this one Company formed in Scotland, the BB has grown into a world wide movement having worked with millions of Boys and young men for well over a century. The present 1st Malvern Company was founded in May 1988; it is parented by Malvern Baptist Church (MBC).

Incorporating the Christian faith, the Boys’ Brigade cares for and challenges children and young people through a programme of informal education in a fun way. Each week more than 50,000 young people, aged 5 to 18, take part in one of its 1,450 groups supported by 12,000 volunteer leaders.


A pipe band is a musical ensemble consisting of pipers and drummers. The term pipes and drums, used by military pipe bands is also common.

The most common form of pipe band consists of a section of pipers playing the Great Highland bagpipe, a section of snare drummers (often referred to as 'side drummers'), several tenor drummers and usually one, though occasionally two, bass drummers.
