When you are solving questions with exponents, you must keep in mind that order of operation (PEDMAS) still applies. In this lesson, we will get you familiar with how PEDMAS works with exponents.

Hi. Welcome to this question here. Wow. We're trying to calculate this whole thing. Seems a lot to do, right? So remember the order of operation says BEDMAS. Okay? So as you go through the question... Oh, it just disappeared on me. Make sure you check. Do you have the bracket? Do you have the exponent? Do you have division and stuff like that? So I just want to look across. I see there's a bracket, so let's tackle the bracket first. So I'm going to copy down the question. 30... Keep everything the same. Now, inside the bracket there's a couple of things that you need to figure out. I got a 6 to the power of 3 minus 2 to the power of 3. Now, don't be tempted to add exponents or subtract exponents. You have to double check. Well, first of all, the base is different between these two guys and it's subtracting, so you can't really do any shortcut actually. So use your calculator. Figure out what's 6 to the power of 3? 6 to the power of 3 is 216, so let's put there 216. So this is my first step. I'm going to change a little bit of color. And subtract 2 to the power of 3. 2 to the power of 3 is 8, so there's your 8 right there. So after my first step, I got myself this bracket right here. 216, subtract 8, I got 208 right there. Okay? Now I'm just going to copy down all the work that I have from the beginning. Okay? Then I go to my second step. So after I've done the bracket... So bracket is checked. I did everything with exponent yet? No. I haven't done this part yet, so I'm going to do it right now. I got 30 in the front. Subtract 5 to the power of 2, which is 25. Now, you have to bring down the sign. Okay? The sign in front of the 5 does not belong to the 5 yet because there's an exponent before that. So 5 has to be raised to the power of 2, which is 25. And you just have to bring down the symbol in front of that, which is still negative. Okay? So this 5 to the power of 2 here doesn't change into a positive 25 here. So just bring down the sign. See? The way I do it is I bring down the signs and there's your 208 still. Okay? There's my 208. So the very last step. Once everything is done, there's no more multiplying, no more division, everything is done, it's just addition and subtraction. Now, as you can see, there's a minus and a plus. So who comes first? The rule is start from left to right. Okay? So you just use your calculator and go 30 minus 25 plus the 208. You get yourself 213 as your final answer. Okay? And that's it for this question.
