In this video Heimler takes you through Unit 8 Topic 3 of the AP U.S. History curriculum which is set in period 8 (1945-1980).

Right after World War II as the Cold War was coming to dominate the minds of Americans, the fear of communism led to the Second Red Scare (not to be confused with the first Red Scare after WWI). So in order to ferret out communists in America, the House of Representatives created the UnAmerican Activities Committee (HUAC) to aid in this effort. This committee was responsible for blacklisting a group of Hollywood Directors (known as the Hollywood Ten) as communist sympathizers.

But the height of the Red Scare came at the hands of Senator Joseph McCarthy who claimed to have knowledge of hundreds of communists working at the highest levels of government. These allegations turned out to be false, but because of his national agitation, the Red Scare is often referred to as McCarthyism.
