Описание: Winchester, the ancient capital of Wessex, dominates Southern England. Equidistant between London, Portsmouth, and Southampton, the city has proved a focal point for both church and state. As such, Winchester’s streets have witnessed its fair share of bloodshed. The city was besieged and sacked in 1141, during the Anarchy between Stephen and Matilda. Both Royalist and Parliamentarian took and retook Winchester throughout the British Civil Wars. And in the aftermath to the Battle of Sedgemoor in 1685, Winchester witnessed the vicious conclusion to the Bloody Assizes. Yet, within Winchester’s sleepy suburbs, it would be hard to believe there had ever been any bloodshed. The castle was totally slighted in 1649. But the reuse of prehistoric and medieval defences and clear evidence of iconoclastic vandalism, have the potential to reawaken these forgotten fields of conflict. Inhabited by a rich cast of characters from across British History, rediscover Winchester at war.
