Flying Over Serpentine Barrens On The White Hills - Northern Peninsula Newfoundland - Avata 2 - 4K
A strange alien almost Martian looking landscape with unique geology on the most western end of the White Hills. The green color in the rocks and gravel is Serpentine and the brown is Peridotite an exposed layer of the earth's mantle.
The White Hills are one of the 3 Areas of the Appalachian Mountains in Newfoundland along with the Tablelands and the Lewis Hills consisting of Peridotite, the exposed mantle layer of the earth which has high iron content giving the rocks their rusty brown color.
The White Hills Peridotite Complex is located at the northernmost tip of the Great Northern Peninsula of Newfoundland. The peridotite is the highest structural slice of the Hare Bay Allochthon and outcrops as three massifs (two large and one small) which may represent dissected parts of a once complete ophiolite complex tectonically emplaced during the Mid-Ordovician as a result of the closing of the Iapetus Ocean.
