The True Scale of Every Modern Nuclear Bomb (Explained in 8 Minutes)
March 1, 1954, the United States tested its first hydrogen bomb, called Castle Bravo, at Bikini Atoll as part of Operation Castle. This was the most powerful nuclear bomb ever tested by the U.S. and the first to use a special fuel called lithium deuteride combined with a design known as the Teller–Ulam method.
Unlike earlier bombs that were gravity bombs or used jet fuel, Castle Bravo was housed inside a huge metal cylinder weighing 23,500 pounds (10,700 kg), nearly 15 feet (4.56 meters) long, and about 4.5 feet (1.37 meters) wide.
