Tamiya Mosquito FB Mk.VI 1/48 Scale Model Kit Plane Build + Eduard Photoetch & Aires Resin 61062

A summary of and post-build review of my build of Tamiya's DeHavilland Mosquito FB Mk.VI/NF Mk.II, 1/48 scale model plane kit, ref 61062. Also reviewed is the Eduard Canopy Mask, Eduard Zoom Cockpit photo-etch upgrade set, the Aires Gun Bay resin upgrade set, and the Vallejo Model Air RAF paint set.

The kit went together really well, literally clicking into place. Hardly any clean-up was needed, with only a little filler to completely hide the main panel lines. The only reason for any lack of detail on the tops of the wings and the fuselage sides is because the actual plane was devoid of much detail due to it's construction process.

The Eduard photo-etch was needed to provide the harnesses (necessary if pilots aren't going to be installed in the model), though much of the other cockpit detail was left invisible; despite the large canopy.

Talking of canopy, with 24 individual panes of glass required masking the Eduard masking set is an essential purchase. Though these panes could be masked with dedication and time, for less that £5 on eBay (including postage) this is one occasion I think it's worth investing in a canopy mask.

The model was primed using Mr Surfacer 1200, and thinned with Mr Hobby Self-Leveling thinners. This gives a really smooth finish for the paint adhere to. The paint used was Vallejo Model Air acrylics. Despite having the RAF WW2 set I still needed to purchase two additional colours for the camouflage pattern due to the Mosquito's paint scheme that separated it for other RAF aircraft. The masking was a combination of Tamiya tape for the straight lines, and white-tak sausages for the curved parts.

After sealing with Pledge the decals went on well, despite some confusion about the side markings. After researching it appears that some Mosquitos broke the traditional marking convention, and the decal instructions are correct.

The main weathering and panel line detail was highlighted using Flory Washes. This was to give the overall appearance of being slightly used and worn, but not overly dirty or weathered. More was applied to the underside than to the topside. Additional weathering was done using brown oil paint, and certain panels and hatches highlighted with Tamiya panel accent.

The model was finished by creating a simple base for it. This was the lid of a box of sweets, roughly filled with DAS clay, painted brown and coated with varying lengths and shades of static grass. Figures could easily be added at a latter date to make it a small diorama.
