The Secret Powers of the Salt
Why does the Torah emphasize again and again the mysterious concept of a “covenant of salt”? We understand other covenants: Torah sustains the world, the rainbow promises no more floods, circumcision marks divine service, and exile atones for sin. But what exactly does salt represent—and why is it repeated with such urgency? Could something so simple and abundant carry a cosmic role?
A striking contradiction sharpens the question. The verse begins narrowly by implying salt applies specifically to the Mincha offering. Yet it concludes expansively: “on all your offerings you shall bring salt.” As Rashi explains, this includes every type of korban. Why begin with one and end with all? And why the unusual warning—not merely to add salt, but never to “omit” it? What is at stake in this covenant that demands such emphasis?
Even more puzzling is the Torah’s brevity. While the intricate details of korbanos are elaborated at length, the mitzvah of salt—though essential to every offering—is stated in a sealed, almost cryptic form. And yet, within this hidden command lies a profound secret: the very code of sustenance and divine flow hinted in “melach bris Elokecha,” connected to the spiritual channel through which blessing enters the world.
The deeper we look, the more we realize: salt is not a detail—it is the key. It preserves, it binds, it completes. The covenant of salt hints to an eternal principle—something that ensures continuity, prevents spiritual decay, and anchors the relationship between man and Hashem.
Join the shiur as we uncover—through the teachings of Chazal, the Zohar, and the Arizal - the hidden power of salt, and why something so simple holds the secret to permanence, Parnassah, and the very existence of the world.
