Recording of a talk by Joyce McIntosh given to the Abertay Historical Society on 11 December 2024
Ye Amphibious Ancients Bathing Association, known locally as the Phibbies, was founded in 1884, and is now the only open water swimming club of its kind in Scotland. In the early days, the club began with members taking a daily dook from Broughty Pier, changing in a tin hut. Since then, the club has expanded into organising swim events in the River Tay and elsewhere, including the famous New Year's Day Dook but also lesser known and longer swims in Dundee and further afield. But even after 140 years, the river is still full of surprises. YeAABA Life President Joyce McIntosh gives a history of the club and shares some of the many tales from swims over the years.
Joyce has been involved with the club for over 43 years and has served as both secretary, president and swim convener in her time.
