Salisbury to Redhill - The Main North Line

Описание: The broad-gauge Salisbury–Long Plains line branched off the Burra line from 1915, reaching Long Plains in 1917 and Redhill in 1925. The northern pastoral areas of South Australia already had a network of mixed gauge lines, which were basically a muddled mess of regional lines stitched together.

This line was designed to create a faster route to Port Pirie and port Augusta but it didn’t reach Port Pirie until 1937, the same time as the standard gauge line reached Port Pirie from Port Augusta. Up until now, travellers and freight from Western Australia bound for the eastern states had to travel via the Pichi Richi Pass and those bound for Adelaide and Melbourne had to travel via a break of gauge at Terowie down through Burra, this was obviously not ideal for a nation wide rail network to be relying on a cobbled together intrastate network that had developed around agricultural development needs and political agendas.

The whole thing was a hot mess due to the constant friction between the Commonwealth’s demand for standard gauge track, Victoria and SA holding on to their broad gauge for dear life, and the more affordable narrow gauge developmental lines around SA. That’s a debate for a whole other video.

Now known as the Main North Line, The line was converted to standard gauge in 1982 and the section north of Redhill was rerouted to connect with the Trans-Australian Railway at Crystal Brook.

This line is now the main link from Adelaide to Sydney, Darwin, and Perth. It sees massive freight and passenger trains every day, but the heydays of intrastate freight and passenger trains are gone and all the stations once dotted along the line are closed.
