Turning Compost the Easy Way! In this quick video, I show you how I turn my compost using a simple garden fork inside a trash can compost bin. It's one of the easiest ways to keep your compost healthy and breaking down fast!
To turn the compost, I plunge the garden fork into the pile, twist, and lift—just enough to mix the materials and bring air into the bin. This simple motion helps speed up the composting process by reintroducing oxygen, which is essential for the microbes that break down organic matter.
🌱 How Often to Turn Compost:
For faster compost, aim to turn your bin every 2–3 days in warm weather. At a minimum, turn it once a week. Frequent turning keeps the microbes active and helps prevent the pile from becoming too compacted or smelly.
💧 Why Moisture Matters:
Compost should feel like a wrung-out sponge—not too dry, not soaking wet. Moisture is crucial because the bacteria and fungi that break down the compost need water to survive and do their job. If it's too dry, the process slows down. If it's too wet, the pile can turn anaerobic and start to stink.
This method is perfect for gardeners using small spaces—like a trash can bin. With just a garden fork, you can turn your compost easily and keep it cooking strong. Don't forget to check for moisture and turn it often for that rich, dark garden gold!
