From my 1950 ‘Betty Crocker’s Picture Cook Book’, comes this recipe for Gingerbread Boys.
This is my husband’s Christmas cookie choice this year. He wants it thick, spicy & frosted; and this recipe meets that criteria.
Recipe ~
GINGERBREAD BOYS (pg. 189)
Mix together thoroughly:
3 cup soft Shortening (or Butter)
1 cup Brown Sugar
1 ½ cups black (dark) Molasses
Stir in:
½ cup cold Water
Sift together and stir in:
7 cups sifted Gold Medal Flour
1 teaspoon Salt
1 teaspoon Allspice
1 teaspoon Ginger
1 teaspoon Cloves
1 teaspoon Cinnamon
Stir in:
2 tsp. baking Soda dissolved in 3 Tbsp. cold Water
Chill dough. Roll out very thick (1/2”). Grease cardboard gingerbread boy pattern, place on the dough, and cut around it with a sharp knife. Or use a Gingerbread boy cutter. With a pancake turner carefully transfer gingerbread boys to lightly greased baking sheet (I used parchment paper lined pans). Press raisins into dough for eyes, nose, mouth and shoe and cuff buttons. Use bits of candied cherries or red gumdrops for coat buttons; strips of citron for tie. Bake. At 350° F. for 15 to 18 minutes. Cool slightly, then carefully remove from baking sheet. With white icing make outlines for collar, cuffs, belt and shoes
NOTE: My husband requested that I only frost them and not add any details.
Amount: About 12 Gingerbread Boys

EASY CREAMY ICING (from my 1963 Betty Crocker’s Cooky Book, pg. 150)
1 cup sifted Confectioners’ Sugar
¼ teaspoon Salt
½ teaspoons Vanilla or other Flavoring
1 ½ tablespoons Cream or 1 Tbsp. Water
Blend sugar, salt, and flavoring. Add cream to make easy to spread. If desired, tint with a few drops of food coloring. Spread on Cookies with spatula or pastry brush.
NOTE: I had to double the Icing recipe in order to have enough to fully frost the Gingerbread Boys, the way my husband wanted them.
