ECOLOGY A124: ECOLOGY OF THE GRAY WHALE
Orange Coast College offers students a field-trip experience to Scammon’s Lagoon, located about 480 miles south of San Diego in the Mexican state of Baja Sur.
“This gives students the opportunity to experience gray whales in the wild, exhibiting natural behaviors such as mating and birthing,” said marine science professor Karen Baker. “The trip would benefit the marine science program [at OCC] in making important connections between field studies and the academic information learned in the classroom.”
OCC’s marine science department offers classes in oceanography, marine biology, marine mammology, and marine aquarium science, and offers students a chance to participate in department research projects. The program operates one of the only student-run aquarium in the nation, a “wet” marine laboratory that includes a 2,500 gallon recirculating cooled seawater system as well as warm water tropical tanks. Coast also has a sea base in nearby Newport Harbor.
Students can earn and Associate of Science degree in biology at OCC, and then transfer to a baccalaureate program in marine biology or oceanography at a four-year institution.

Orange Coast College's 164-acre campus is located in Costa Mesa just minutes from Southern California’s beautiful beaches. Founded in 1947, with classes beginning in 1948, OCC has grown into one of the nation’s largest -- and finest -- community colleges.
OCC features exceptional facilities and the latest in technology and offers more than 135 academic and career programs, including one of the nation’s largest and most acclaimed public nautical programs. Nearly half the students on campus are enrolled in one of OCC's Career and Technical Education programs.

Over the past decade, thousands of OCC students have transferred to UC and CSU campuses. Additionally, many Orange Coast students go on to transfer to private colleges and universities within California and across the nation.
A member of the Coast Community College District, OCC offers fall, winter, spring, and summer classes and is fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.
