I made a rolling pin that was made as a gift for someone I work with. It was my first time making a rolling pin, and since I don't have experience using a lathe, I had to find a different way of accomplishing it.
First, I cut down some walnut, maple, and cherry to 2 inch strips and glued them together to make a 2 inch square dowel. Once the glue had dried, I trimmed it to length, and then using a tablesaw, I changed it into an octagon by cutting 45-degree angles along all the corners.
After that, I used a benchtop belt sander to rough shape the octagonal dowel into a rod dowel and taper the ends into that iconic french rolling pin shape.
Next, I moved to hand sanding to finalize the shape and make it nice and smooth. I used water to pop the grain. Then, one more final sanding before applying finish. A mix of tung oil, beeswax, and citrus oil. One final buff, and she's all ready to go.
