Abstract
This workshop explores how participatory design methodologies can surface experiences of thermal diversity and inequities in urban spaces, linking bodily experiences of hormonal fluctuation with the designed layers of material artefacts and atmospheres created by interior and exterior environments. What are our different experiences of living with dynamic climates, inside and out? And what are the socio-material relations that support us to do this?
Through a process of image-making, story-sharing and codesign, we propose that a thermal politics is always a body politics, engaging with Stacey Alaimo's "ethics of inhabiting" and Sara Ahmed's framework of care-full re-inhabiting of spaces not designed for diverse bodies. The workshop contributes to emerging scholarship on climate and thermal justice and inclusive social and civic dialogues about the futures we want.
Workshop participants are invited to bring an object, image or performance that will help them to tell a story about experiencing thermal fluctuations (heat, humidity, sweat, chill, breeze, dryness, wetness) that only they can tell. These artefacts will form a living archive of practices of weathering dynamic climates to disrupt dominant technocentric narratives and strategies of urban cooling.
The workshop will be limited to 20 participants to facilitate sharing and co-design activities.
