Sharing an interview with our Hapkido teacher Dojunim Ji Han Jae during a long drive we shared en route to him tossing me around at a seminar.
It is important to understand what he meant when he speaks of Bruce Lee being very smart in choosing the very best martial artists he knew, trusted friends and training partners, to act as his opponents in his films.
He truly means this as the highest compliment because it was only with people of the highest skill and trust that Lee could push the limits to create the best possible fight scenes.
This is why people like Guro Dan Inosanto, Dojunim Ji Han Jae, and Lee’s student Kareem Abdul-Jabbar were his partners in “Game of Death.”
Lee also did this with Hwang In Shik, Chuck Norris, Bob Wall, and Bolo Yeung because he wanted to work with highly skilled people that the audience would see as formidable and that he could trust to help him do his best work.
Growing up I always wished I could have trained with Bruce Lee. Fortunately I was able to train with many of his friends and students including Sifu Richard Bustillo, whose heavenly birthday is today, and Dojunim Ji Han Jae, who’s passed away today.
