What happens when the tools you have to work with aren't set up to accomplish that task at hand? Start hacking! This quick video tutorial shares how to route MIDI out of, and then back into, your DAW for advanced modulation options!
Wouldn't it be great if we all had DAWs that offered an easy solution to every problem? Well, we are getting pretty close. But we still have a few things in every DAW that we users are frustrated by. One pet peeve that haunts many producers all over the world is the lack of universal modulators in many programs. But there are workarounds that you can use to get it all working the way you want. This little MIDI routing trick, for instance, will transform a MIDI effect plugin intended to be used on a single track into a modulation controller that can be assigned to just about any parameter on many different tracks at once!
It's discoveries like this one that can literally change the way you make music. And the level of consistency and continuity that using one modulation controller across several parameters at once brings is priceless. This is something that can come in very handy when working with synths that do not have robust modulation architecture built-in.
If you take this idea one step further, you can use these same ideas to modulate parameters in plugins, too. And, as it's pointed out in the lesson, you can use MIDI learn functions both in individual plugins/synths and universally in your DAW's global settings. This opens up many doors for advanced arpeggiation and sequencing techniques, randomization of parameter settings and, of course, modulation options.
