In this video, Dr. Byrd discusses the importance of in-office ultrasonography as an essential element in the evaluation process. Next to your history and your physical examination, ultrasonography is the most powerful clinical assessment tool.

But it' s not just about the machine, it's also the skill level of the person performing the ultrasound exam and ultrasound guided injections. In Dr. Byrd's office, Beth Bardowski, MSN, APN, ACPN-BC, has more experience with ultrasound guided injections in and around the hip than any other person on the planet.

Assessing complex hip disorders without the benefit of ultrasound would be like trying to practice cardiology without a stethoscope. You are just missing a very important weapon in your armamentarium against hip disease.

We don't need ultrasound much for other joints like the knee or shoulder. If you know what to look for, you can almost diagnose an ACL tear or separated shoulder from your couch watching a football game on TV. It's different in the hip. In one important study looking at young adults with non-arthritic hip disorders, they found these individuals saw an average of 4.2 healthcare providers before a diagnosis was reached.

So much revolves around Femoroacetabular Impingement (also known as FAI). Regardless of how recently the symptoms developed, this is just the culmination of the cumulative effect of a process that has been developing since childhood. Often, they are compensating for the hip disorder long before the hip starts to first become symptomatic. The compensatory disorders may obscure how much the hip is the underlying issue. Oftentimes, ultrasound guided injection of anesthetic can really cut to the chase and tell you how much is the hip the underlying problem.

There are a myriad of other disorders around the hip. Ultrasound can be immensely helping in assessing these issues. You can visualize the structures around the hip, and under ultrasound guidance, you can perform diagnostic and potentially therapeutic injections for a broad variety of disorders.

A native Nashvillian, Dr. Byrd is the third generation of physicians in his family to serve this community. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Miami, graduating magna cum laude. He obtained his medical degree from Vanderbilt University and performed his orthopaedic training at the University of Louisville. Dr. Byrd participated in fellowship training programs in two specialty areas of orthopaedics.
