Today is harvest day! Join Katie and Curtis, two of our dedicated farm workers, in the garden as they harvest some delicious fruits such as ulu, lemons, grapefruit, cacao and avocados. Katie and Curtis take us on a journey through the luscious greenery while they take turns explaining the different plants, the different stages of each plant and when it’s the best time to harvest.
First stop is the ulu tree. Katie explains that the ulu is ready because they are bigger, a little bit yellow and brownish and super sticky on the outside. Curtis says to leave the ulu on the ground to let the sap drip out, he chuckles and says, “You don’t want to get that on your kitchen counter!” Katies also explains that breadfruit (aka ulu) is very sought out because it produces so much fruit and can feed a lot of people.
Katie and Curtis continue walking down the narrow, lush paths of the farm moving from one plant to another. They come to a lemon tree and explain that the lemons are easy to harvest because you just find them like Easter eggs on the ground. The lemon tree produces all year round, sometimes it has stints where it doesn’t produce as much but it recently picked back up again and is producing more.
Some plants get inspected and not yet harvested. Katie spots some abiu that aren’t quite ready to be harvested yet, they are green now but they’ll wait for them to turn yellow. Then there’s the pomelo tree which also produces year round. It can be a bit challenging to tell when pomelo are ready to harvest because you can’t really tell until you cut it open. A baby pomelo is the size of a grape and can grow to be the size of your head! Onto the avocado tree, Katie explains that an avocado is ready for harvest when it’s not as glossy and is more smooth and matte on the outside. The avocado stem that connects the fruit to the tree will also start to brown when it is ready to be cut down. In addition, Curtis explains about the Cacao plant, “as they get older, they’ll start to turn a little bit more green on the edges and produce a brighter red color.”
Last but not least, Katie tells us about the papaya tree. The papaya tree branches can snap off because they become so heavy with fruit especially during the dry season. The tree is hollow and soft material on the inside making it easy to break. We use the papaya to make papaya salad, one of our most favorite dishes!
Thanks for the lesson! See you next time!
