Therizinosaurus (Latin: Therizinosaurus cheloniformis, meaning “slash lizard”), a genus of giant therizinosaurids with huge claws that lived in what is now Mongolia, lived at the end of the Cretaceous period 70 million years ago. Although the fossil remains of Therizinosaurus are very incomplete, inferences can be made about their physical characteristics based on related therizinosaurids. Like other members of their family, Therizinosaurus probably had a small skull on a long neck, a bipedal gait, and a heavy, broad body (as evidenced by the wide pelvis of other therizinosaurids). It had record-length forelimbs among dinosaurs, which may have reached lengths of up to 2.5 meters or even 3.5 meters in the largest known specimen. The hind limbs ended with four weight-bearing toes, unlike other groups of theropods. In 2010, Gregory S. Paul estimated the maximum size of Therizinosaurus to be 10 meters in length and 5 tons in weight.
The most distinctive feature of Therizinosaurus was the presence of giant claws on each of the three toes of its forelimbs. Large specimens of the claws are incomplete, but they probably reached about 1 meter (3.3 feet) in length. These claws are the longest of any known animal.
The claws were used by Therizinosaurus as a defense. Ducking branches into its mouth wasn't really necessary - it has a long neck for that - but they were great for fighting. But there is one problem with the blows of clawed paws - it is inconvenient to slap the Tarbosaurus with them, as is often shown in popular culture. The claws are pointed at the ends and cannot be used as blades. Therizinosaurus used sharp, stabbing blows, trying to pierce the enemy. Many of Therizinosaurus' bones look very similar to those of two other dinosaurs found in sediments of the same age in the same area of Mongolia. These are Segnosaurus and Erlikosaurus. All three of these dinosaurs were probably very close relatives. The well-preserved skull of Erlikosaurus shed light on the lifestyle of Therizinosaurus. The skull of Erlikosaurus was long, low, with a horny beak at the end. Small teeth with jagged edges indicate that the animal fed mainly on plant food, but could sometimes diversify its diet with animal food in the form of small lizards and mammals. Therizinosaurus had a similar diet, despite the powerful claws it used to gather plants. Eating plants is rare among therapods, which only adds to the mystery of studying this unusual animal.
