" Der Liebesexpress" - The Love Express - is a 1931 German musical comedy film directed by Robert Wiene and starring Georg Alexander, Dina Gralla and Joseph Schmidt in his first picture. No print of the film is known to survive, and it is therefore a lost film . It was one of the operetta films made in Germany during the early sound era.
The feature films of the late 1920s were presented on reels with a maximum screening length of 16 minutes, after which it was necessary to switch to a second projector. A long-playing record was developed for the soundtrack, which initially had a playing time of twelve minutes. This media association is also known as the "needle tone" process. It was replaced by "light sound" on the filmprint in the 1930s.
In this video you can listen to Jospeh Scmidt singing a song from the film on a normal 78 rpm record, followed by the same song in Italian from the 40 cm 33 1/3 rpm shellac recording with the original film sound. Luckily in this way more than 10 minutes of the film sound has survived in which Joseph Schmidt sings two songs. In a newly planned documentairy about the life and work of Joseph Schmidt there will be more about this unique and rare discovered section of "Nadelton" - "Filmsound".

Dina Gralla (1905-1994) was an German leading lady of the 1920's and early 30's, born in Warsaw - Poland. Trained as a ballerina, she first performed in musical revues on stage in Berlin. In silent films, she either danced or played ingénues. Gralla was forced to give up acting after being afflicted with tuberculosis in 1933. She found alternative employment variously as a stenographer, cleaning woman and waitress. Joseph Schmidt (1904-1942) had to flee for the Nazis and died tragically in Switserland.
