Background: Kumbaya is a spiritually powerful prayer song, a heartfelt plea for God's presence, comfort, and deliverance from oppression. The title "Kumbaya" derives from the Gullah phrase "come by here," reflecting its deep cultural origins.
The song emerged in the 1920s-1930s from the Gullah communities of the Sea Islands off the coasts of South Carolina and Georgia. Originally sung by African American communities in the Lowcountry, many of whom were descendants of enslaved people, Kumbaya represents the rich musical heritage of the Gullah people, who preserved African musical traditions while creating new forms of spiritual expression during and after slavery.
