Cindy and Rick are back on the grounds of the Museum of Appalachia in Norris, TN. They are in front of the cantilever barn. A unique nineteenth-century structure, this particular cantilever, or “overhang” barn, once stood in the Seymour community, between Knoxville and the Great Smoky Mountains, about 40 miles south of the Museum. These unusual barns are extremely rare; very few remain in existence, and nearly all of them have been found in East Tennessee. Most seem to have been built in the late 1800s on self-sufficient farms. Research indicates that the unusual design may derive from German forebay farms in Pennsylvania.
The song choice this time is "Old Rosin the Beau". "Old Rosin the Beau" (or "Rosin the Bow") is a traditional folk song popular in America, England, Ireland, and Canada, first published in Philadelphia in 1838, though possibly dating back to the 1700s. Early versions of "Old Rosin the Beau" relate the story of a man who was popular in his youth, then in late life, the ladies refer to him as "Old Rosin, the beau", as he prepares for the grave. As a drinking song, the chorus chimes, "Take a drink for Old Rosin the Beau" and uses dark comedy, with jests about his grave or tombstone, taken in stride while repeating the sing-song melody.
Several US presidential campaign songs were set to the tune of "Old Rosin the Beau", including for Abraham Lincoln ("Lincoln and Liberty").
Other uses of this tune include two broadsides by Pete Seeger: "Acres of Clams", which dealt with the Seabrook Station Nuclear Power Plant, and "Bring Back Old 1899", which dealt with the dismantling of a federal water quality statute.
This is the final cut from the "Dry Run" video after they finally achieved
"Acceptable!" status.
I’ve traveled this wide world all over
And now to another I go.
And I know the good quarters are waiting
To welcome old Rosin the Bow.
To welcome old Rosin the Bow. (x2)
And I know the good quarters are waiting
To welcome old Rosin the Bow.
When I’m dead and laid out on the counter
A voice you will hear from below,
Saying “Send down a hogshead of whisky
To drink with old Rosin the Bow.
To drink with old Rosin the Bow”. (x2)
Saying “Send down a hogshead of whisky
To drink with old Rosin the Bow”.
Then get a half dozen stout fellows
And line them all up in a row
Let them drink out of half gallon bottles
To the memory of Rosin the Bow
To the memory of Rosin the Bow (x2)
Let them drink out of half gallon bottles
To the memory of Rosin the Bow
Then get a half dozen stout fellows
And line them all stagger and go
And let ’em dig a great hole in the meadow
And in it put Rosin the Bow.
And in it put Rosin the Bow. (x2)
Let ’em dig a great hole in the meadow
And in it put Rosin the Bow.
Then get ye a couple of bottles.
Put one at me head and me toe.
With a diamond ring scratched upon ’em
The name of old Rosin the Bow.
The name of old Rosin the Bow. (x2)
With a diamond ring scratched upon ’em
The name of old Rosin the Bow.
I feel that grim reaper approaching,
That cruel remorseless old foe,
And I lift up me glass in his honour.
Take a drink with old Rosin the Bow.
Take a drink with old Rosin the Bow. (x2)
And I lift up me glass in his honour.
Take a drink with old Rosin the Bow.
