Thanks for visiting my latest restoration video,
I found this rusty non running Horikawa Robot in need of restoration and repair on eBay, These were hot toys in the 60-70s this model is the Rotate-O-Matic space astronaut, it was very rusty on the rear body probably due to a battery leak, the legs and much of the interior tin was also rusty, however the litho was in remarkably good condition which was a plus. When I attached a power supply to what was remaining of the battery terminals there was no signs of life so I set about stripping it down.

I have also added a brief chapter to explain how the mechanism works, it’s interesting to see how it alternates between walking and rotating.

The restoration involved
cutting out the rust from the body and replacing it with some tin from an old biscuit tin,
Solder filling a rust hole to the back battery cover,
Repairs and new terminals for the battery holder,
Fixing a disconnected wire from the motor,
Replacing the split leg cog with new old stock,
Tightening loose arms,
New spring for the front doors,
De-rusting all panels,
Etch prime - top coat- clear coat,

The brand Horikawa is a known name among Japanese toys collectors, but many people don't realize that they were a wholesaler and not a producer.

The robots Horikawa sold were made by the Metal House company, Tokyo.
