As a great fan of historic Ferraris, I'm thrilled to show you this video about the one-off Ferrari 250 GT SWB "Breadvan" designed by engineer Giotto Bizzarrini and built by Piero Drogo's Sports Cars bodywork in Modena, Italy, in 1962. It's worth telling the story of this car and its unusual shape that the French renamed "La Camionette". The anti-Ferrari 250 GTO was born after engineers Giotto Bizzarrini and Carlo Chiti left Ferrari in 1961. The duo was finalising work on the Prancing Horse GT car when legend has it (but I read this in several books) that disagreements and misunderstandings with Enzo Ferrari's wife, Laura, made "Drake" decide to fire them. Count Giovanni Volpi di Misurata, owner of Scuderia Serenissima, financed the engineers' plan to become sports car manufacturers, which they did by founding ATS (Automobili Sportive e Sport). Upon learning of the new industrial project, Enzo Ferrari immediately blocked the two Ferrari 250 GTOs that were to be delivered to Scuderia Serenissima for the 1962 racing season—no big deal. Count Volpi purchased a used Ferrari 250 GT SWB, chassis #2819GT, asking the engineers to design a car that could beat Ferrari's 250 GTOs. Thus began Bizzarrini's work. He modified the 3-liter V12 engine by converting the lubrication system to a dry sump. This allowed it to be moved lower and further back, ensuring better balance and handling of the car. Certainly, however, it's the shape that immediately catches the eye. Piero Drogo's Modena Sports Car bodywork applied Wunibald Kamm's aerodynamic theories to a car for the first time with a truncated tail design.
Managed by Scuderia Serenessima, it took part for the first time in the 1962 24 Hours of Le Mans, driven by Carlo Maria Abate and Colin Davis. On the French circuit, its shape allowed the car to be faster on the straights than the 250 GTO. Unfortunately, after only four hours of racing, it had to retire due to a problem with the drive shaft. Up until that point, however, it was ahead of the 250 GTO cars built in Maranello.
Also, in 1962, it took part in two races, Brands Hatch in England and the Ollon-Villars in Switzerland, winning both in the GT category. Although the car had proven to be competitive and successful, it soon ended its racing career, becoming the personal car of Count Volpi. In recent years, a second life has seen it again take to the track in classic car competitions. You will undoubtedly remember its damage after contact with a Shelby Daytona Cobra Coupé at the 2015 Goodwood Revival and the accident against the barriers at the 2022 Le Mans Classic. Fortunately, the car has been restored and is now in great shape. Right here, on the Mugello circuit, thanks to the Halusa family, who currently use it in racing, we could film it during the GT races of the Master Historic championship.
