Описание: SANTA MONICA — Monday, February 23, 2026 — Crews from Malcolm Drilling Company returned to Moomat Ahiko Way Monday morning, advancing deep foundation work tied to construction of the temporary pedestrian bridge and vehicle ramp at the Santa Monica Pier.

Operating a tracked micropile drill rig, crews were observed drilling deep, narrow shafts into the ground along the south side of the Pier bridge approach. Unlike traditional pile driving, the system uses rotary drilling rather than impact hammering, reducing vibration near existing structures — including the aging 1939 Pier bridge.

Micropiles are typically 6 to 12 inches in diameter and are installed in tight or complex soil conditions. Once each shaft is drilled, steel casing and reinforcing bar are inserted before high-strength grout or concrete is pumped into the borehole under pressure, forming a reinforced column designed to transfer structural loads into stable ground below.

Adjacent to the drill rig, a grout mixing and pumping unit labeled “ENTRIC / Malcolm” was staged alongside stacked pallets of cement or grout mix. The process observed on site followed a clear sequence: drill → insert casing/rebar → pressure grout — a method commonly used in urban and constrained work zones where minimizing ground disturbance is critical.

A section of the south lane remained closed as crews worked beneath and adjacent to the bridge structure. The Moomat Ahiko Way off-ramp from southbound Pacific Coast Highway is scheduled to remain closed through Friday, February 27, to accommodate foundation construction activities.

According to project information distributed by the City, foundation work for the temporary pedestrian bridge and vehicle ramp began earlier this month and is expected to last approximately four weeks. Drilling operations are scheduled on weekdays from 5 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Officials note the work may be loud and disruptive due to large machinery and drilling operations. Access to the Pier is being maintained throughout construction.

Malcolm Drilling Company, Inc., which has operated for more than six decades in the deep foundation and ground engineering industry, specializes in drilled shafts, micropiles, auger-cast piles, excavation support systems, and ground improvement techniques. The company frequently performs complex foundation work in constrained environments requiring precision and structural integrity.

The temporary pedestrian bridge and vehicle ramp are being constructed in preparation for demolition and reconstruction of the existing Santa Monica Pier Bridge later this year. The new bridge is designed to meet modern structural and seismic standards ahead of the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
