(Numbers 21:4–9)

As the Israelites journeyed through the wilderness after leaving Mount Hor, they grew tired, discouraged, and impatient. The route was difficult, and they began to speak against God and Moses, complaining about the lack of food and water and expressing disgust for the manna God had been providing.

In response to their rebellion and ingratitude, God sent “fiery serpents” (venomous snakes) into their camp. The serpents bit the people, and many died. Realizing their sin, the people came to Moses and confessed, saying,

“We have sinned, for we have spoken against the Lord and against you. Pray to the Lord that He take away the serpents from us.”
