The Black Boy Who Saved the Titanic Architect in 1898 — Then Died on the Ship 14 Years Later
In 1898, a young Black boy named Joseph Harper pulled Thomas Andrews, the future chief architect of the Titanic, from the icy waters of Belfast Lough after a shipyard accident, saving his life. The event was quietly buried by Harland and Wolff, but it set a path that would forever link their fates. Fourteen years later, both men would board the Titanic—Andrews as its designer and Harper as a crew member—and both would perish when the ship sank in the North Atlantic.
After Joseph Harper’s death in 1964, his children discovered a compass he had carried for 52 years, along with a photograph of Thomas Andrews and a newspaper clipping about the Titanic. The compass, now displayed in a Belfast museum, is often mislabeled as belonging to Andrews, but it survived because Harper kept it as a reminder of a life saved and a debt that could never be repaid.
This story is one of courage, fate, and unbreakable human connections across time and tragedy. It asks us to reflect on the lives we touch, the debts we owe, and the price of the ambitions we pursue.
