• Album Notes •
Croak is a concept album about the ongoing amphibian extinction event, in which 33% of all amphibian species in the world are at risk of extinction if nothing is done to reverse their declines. Their declines are completely due to anthropogenic impacts. Drawing from a multitude of genres, Escaping Aghartha has created a unique and dynamic album that has few parallels. The founder and leader of the band, Avery, who is a biologist says "I wanted to add an element of time passing to Croak. To accomplish this, bells, stopwatches, and grandfather clock noises have been included in the album to create an urgent and dire mood. The amphibian extinction is happening rapidly, and in my daily life, I feel this urgency acutely. It weighs on me. Action and change is needed desperately. Croak acts both as a way to raise awareness about these issues and also as a catharsis for my frustration and sorrow".

Amphibian species are becoming extinct around 211 times faster than normal when compared with baseline extinction levels [1, 2]. This rate of extinction is extremely alarming - not only are amphibians important in ecosystems, but amphibians are also indicator species because they're relatively sensitive to changes in their environment. When amphibian species are in decline, that indicates poor environmental health and is a warning sign [3, 4]. If nothing is done to reverse environmental decline, other groups of animals will continue to experience increasing extinction rates.

Habitat loss is the most widespread cause of declines [5]. Development on wetlands, logging, palm oil/soybean plantations, mining, and cattle ranching are some of the most common practices which lead to habitat loss - especially in tropical environments [6]. Some species have an extremely small range which makes them especially susceptible to extinction from habitat disturbance.

Chytrid (pronounced kih-trid), a species of invasive fungus which has been unintentionally spread worldwide by humans, infects amphibians. It’s a highly infectious fungus that spreads rapidly and has high lethality rates. In some species, mortality is 100%. The Panamanian golden frog is a well-known example in which chytrid spread quickly throughout the species and resulted in their complete extinction in the wild [6].

Drought and climate change are also major threats to amphibians. Because amphibians require wet environments to reproduce, they are very sensitive to water cycle disturbances [6].

Dire future looms ahead unless change occurs in the:
Behavior of ourselves and our leaders
Consumers and producers
Cultures and world views

We share crushing burden of living through the Anthropocene.
What will the extinction toll be?

The scientific data is clear - humanity is responsible for climate change and the Anthropocene - the sixth mass extinction in the history of earth. The situation is spiraling out of control at an exponential rate. Yet some people deny factual data and cling to conspiracies instead. As a scientist, I will tell you this - these problems are immediate and demand a response. Frequent wildfires, flooding, famine, pandemics, and wars fought over resources await humanity if we fail to act.

Perpetual decline into extinction
Happening before our eyes with frogs and toads
They’re among the first victims - more are to come
Vigor, vitality...ashen mortality
Action is urgent - we can’t waste single moment
Coral reefs bleach. Glacier ice melts into the sea.
