The Museum of International Folk Art collaborated with Kyoto-based yōkai artist and scholar, Kōno Junya, to create an immersive obake yashiki as part of the museum’s exhibition, “Yōkai: Ghosts & Demons of Japan.” "Obake yashiki" means “monster house” and they are considered a traditional form of Japanese amusement. Obake yashiki typically incorporate traditional Japanese monster and ghost imagery and stories and they always include jump scares. Like American haunted house traditions, they are often situated in amusement parks.
Mr. Kōno designed the layout, created the monster heads, and advised the museum’s work with haunted house engineers to trick out the obake yashiki with lighting, sound, and other sensory effects.
