XENIA -- On a daily basis, police officers can find themselves in a dangerous situation, a high-speed car chase, an active shooter or often a suspect on the run. It takes months of training to prepare them for these unexpected moments on the streets.
Darkness is just one of the scenarios academy commander Mike Hild likes to practice with his students.
He's worked at the Greene County Criminal Justice Academy for seven years and has more than 40 years of law enforcement experience.
"We practice handcuffing in the dark, we practice interviewing people in the dark, with maintaining control of your flash light the suspect in different lighting situations just like it is in the street," says Hild.
Hild says it is important to re-create real life scenarios so officers are prepared for anything to happen.
33-year-old Chris Johnson is pursuing law enforcement as a second career, he's been in the academy for about four months and prefers the hands-on training.
"Very intense training but it makes you think on your feet and makes you more aware than when you walk into a room, you immediately observe and watch everything," says Johnson.
The state of Ohio requires 600 hours of training for police officers. The Greene County Criminal Justice Center adds another 30 to 40 hours on top of that.
