For her finale of her Piano Quintet in A minor, Price writes a scherzo which brings with it a hint of the scurrying tarantella rhythm we find in some of the last movements of Beethoven and Schubert. Price's piece is essentially an envoi, and while it doesn’t attempt to match the scope of the quintet's first two movements, it provides the work with an exhilarating conclusion. Collaborations between the Takács Quartet and Marc-André Hamelin can always be relied on to deliver rather special results, and their fifth Hyperion album together—coupling Antonín Dvořák and Florence Price—is no exception.
