Sumeet Mhaskar, a labour sociologist and professor at OP Jindal Global University, has been analysing non-Brahmin and OBC politics over the last century and how these communities respond to the question of Hindutva and their economic hardship.
In the latest episode of What’s Your Ism, hosted by Sudipto Mondal, he discusses the intersection of caste and class with examples from dominant caste movements in India.
“They were the biggest beneficiaries of secured jobs in the country. Of the formal sector and within the formal sector of the formal conditions of employment. The bigger beneficiaries of these jobs have been the upper castes and the dominant castes. Here, caste and class come together,” he says, adding that companies have been shut down and the government is hiring people on contract.
“Every community is facing that brunt, but because they (the dominant castes) had taken over the lion’s share, in their own view, they feel that they are the ones who have lost out. And therefore they feel that something ought to be done.”
